On August 20, I received an email from a couple of my fellow Campus Innovation staff members who work at our Orlando headquarters. They said they had an unexpected opportunity to train several headquarters interns from several Cru departments starting August 24 — yes, just four days later! Would I be available to facilitate parts of any of the four sessions? It turns out I was, so the following Tuesday and Thursday I led some sections of our Innovation Training Course.
On Tuesday, I taught a few brainstorming methods that help people generate creative ideas to meet a need or solve a problem. After each method, the interns spent a couple of minutes practicing the skill.
Then on Thursday, I coached them as they practiced communicating their ideas to someone through descriptions or drawings. (This is called a “proof of concept” or “concept prototype.”) My co-facilitator explained how to make simple, inexpensive mockups of ideas to test how well they will work. Both of us fielded questions about this process (called “prototyping”).
Finally, I led a discussion where the interns shared what was most significant to them in the four-session training, and how they thought their new skills would help them in their ministry with Cru.
I always enjoy leading our Innovation Training sessions, and this time was even more meaningful because I was able to help a new facilitator learn the ropes! (She has been on our team longer than I have, but she had not facilitated training before.)
